International Research Internship Program
In collaboration with ICER/NIH Cambodia
Build globally competitive research experience for future academic and professional opportunities abroad
The Translational Health Research Unit (THRU) at PHD Cambodia, in collaboration with ICER/NIH Cambodia, offers a structured international research internship program for master’s and PhD students from leading universities worldwide. This program provides hands-on experience in applied public health and infectious disease research in Cambodia, supporting students to contribute to real-world research while advancing their academic training.
Program Duration
- Short-term: 3–6 months
- Long-term: Up to 12 months
Eligible Participants
- Master’s students (MPH, Global Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Microbiology, One Health)
- PhD students (Public Health, Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, Virology, Veterinary/Public Health)
- Priority for students from USA, UK, Australia, South Korea, and Japan
Research Areas
- Infectious disease surveillance and outbreak analytics
- Field epidemiology and specimen collection
- Translational and laboratory-linked public health research
- Implementation research and One Health approaches
What We Provide
- Structured research-stage internship with dedicated supervision
- Support for Master’s thesis or internship report (aligned with ongoing projects)
- Access and support for:
- Laboratories (as applicable)
- Field specimen collection
- National and provincial surveillance systems
- Partner hospitals and sentinel sites
- De-identified datasets for analysis
- Administrative support for Cambodia visa during internship period
Note: PHD/THRU does not award academic degrees. Academic credit and degree requirements remain the responsibility of the student’s home university.
Ethics & Compliance
All research activities follow NIH ethics standards and are conducted under protocols approved by the National Ethics Committee for Health Research (NECHR), Cambodia. Interns participate only in approved research activities and follow institutional SOPs.
Internship Outputs
Depending on project scope, interns may produce:
- Thesis chapters or internship reports
- Surveillance analyses and dashboards
- Field or laboratory reports
- Poster presentations or manuscript drafts
Program Fees
Program fees range from USD 2,500 to 6,000 depending on duration and scope.
Program fees cover scientific supervision, administrative coordination, onboarding, reporting, and access to approved research platforms.
Field specimen collection, provincial travel, accommodation outside Phnom Penh, and project-specific research costs are not included and are the responsibility of the student or their sponsoring institution, unless otherwise agreed in advance. Program Fees
